Stone Cemetery History
Burial customs in the United States evolved with the development of the country. Settlers designated family plots on their homesteads and eventually in churchyards for church members. The first gravestones were fieldstones or wood. Marble was the most popular gravestone material. White bronze with a bluish-gray coloring was also commenly used for tombstones. Linestone was a frequest choice for sculptures. By the late 1870’ s, granite had become a popular choice.
